We will allow you to take photos of us while we are eating if you meditate with us afterwards,“ a friendly monk of a remote Buddhist monastery told Christian Voigt a few years ago. And with it, of course, gave his foreign guest two gifts at once: the generous offer to allow him to participate in the everyday life of the religious community – and the opportunity for a wonderful photo. „I learned how to practice walking meditation during my time in the monastery. I continue to practise it to this day,“ says the photographer.

Isn`t travel simply a gift of life for those who allow themselves to experience something new and foreign, far from the well-worn paths of their home? „A trip is like drinking from the source of life,“ stated German poet and dramatist Friedrich Hebbel in the 19th century. The seductive essence of this drink, an elixir of life that has a profound impact on the viewer, flows from Christian Voigt`s photographs.

The Hamburg-based photographer manages to find images on his trips that leave us in awe of the world. That might even be his biggest talent, hidden amidst his photos that convey almost hyper-realistic perfection. We stand in front of the images like a child amazed by his first fireworks display and rediscover our sense of wonder for some precious moments.

That might even be his biggest talent, hidden amidst his photos that convey almost hyper-realistic perfection. We stand in front of the images like a child amazed by his first fireworks display and rediscover our sense of wonder for some precious moments.

In these moments, Christian Voigt`s monumental pictures open up to us like vast pools for the senses. We gently lose ourselves in an archetypal dune landscape that evokes the realm of myths and fairy tales, and then find ourselves in the historical architecture of an ancient Egyptian temple. Our thoughts cross continents and cultures in these images. They open up breathtaking horizons, where authentic living culture meets the aesthetic culture of images. A new adventure of the senses awaits us with each image. We can almost hear the evening drone of moped and motorcycle engines revving in the streets of Vietnam, the stomping rhythm oft he music emanating from the glowing red Las Vegas strip club where a stripper appears to gyrate in the blurred background of our fantasies. Our eyes and our thoughts set off on an excursion in Voigt’s „world images.“

The apparently restless globetrotter Christian Voigt shares a condensed world culture from his trips with us. He raves about the power of a large print in XXL format that practically pulls his viewers into the picture. „I need the massiveness to capture my emotions. When you sit in front oft he large format the result is a feast for the eyes.“ Voigt`s imposing and monumental works effortlessly fill the room, shaping the atmosphere of the interior. The people in these images are often small, providing proportion to a large-scale scenario of a location and everything going on in it.

The charismatic big image hunter has an eye for cultural rites and magical moments abroad and allows us to share in his emotions during these precious moments. In addition to several images that have been prepared for years, there are also often spectacular examples of his spontaneous reaction to locations and encounters

„Christian captures the beauty oft he world in pictures“, gushes a Californian patron of his work when asked why he is such a fan oft he German photographer`s work. His photogrphs often do seem to be a visual approach to the definition of beauty. „I love depicting beauty,“ says the photographer, not meaning a one-dimensional concept. Voigt says that he also looks for and finds this beauty in the chaos of an Asian street market, for example. Of course the beauty of these images is in their creative precision, their clear, vibrant colors, and perfectly executed compositions.

Voigt`s motifs offer the viewer a perfect arrangement of harmonies and targeted dissonances. The passionate photographer composes complex symphonies for the eyes. The photo artist does not care wheater these locations have been frequently photographed or never been photographed. „I have taken pictures of New York`s Central Park. A billion photos of it have been taken already,“ says Christian Voigt. „I’m not worried, because I know that my photo will look different.“ The 20th century artistic genius Pablo Picasso once said, „Some painters transform the sun into a yellow spot, others transform a yellow spot into the sun.“ However, a painter that transforms a yellow spot into a sunrise is an artist. Christian Voigt loves this quote. And transforms a single photo into an atmospheric picture that , using up to 30 picutures, condenses one spot into a newly enriched complete picuture that reflects its pulse and appeal. The result could be photographs of the collective works of an ancient library or details of the street life of  a faraway land. Chaos and order, opulence and simplicity are all equals in a pictorial cosmos that shows us the multifacteted nature of the world.

Julius Rooymans

Julius Rooymans

“As a little boy I liked to draw adventures. If the paper turned out to be too small, I would stick an extra sheet to it. And then another one. Nowadays I make film and photo installations. I dream of large projects where people can walk through the projections and images. In a sense, I’m still the little boy who makes drawings of stories that run outside the magazine.“

Julius Rooymans grew up in an artist’s nest in a village near Amsterdam. His father was a painter, mother a sculptor. He learned from his parents to never choose the easy way. If you need something for your project, you have to do it. His father regularly had to choose between buying food or linen to paint on. That is the side of art that Julius saw from an early age: self-sacrifice, enthusiasm. Put financial security and health at risk for your productions.

“I stretch the dividing line between reality and fantasy: how much friction fits in an image before the viewer becomes aware of it? Your own eyes solve my photos.“

His work caught on after the Rietveld Academy. He received assignments for international advertising agencies and magazines, made covers for Newsweek and The New York Times, did shoots from helicopters over Africa and stood on skyscrapers in America.

“Registering the photographic reality doesn’t grab me, I love compelling great stories.”

“Registering the photographic reality doesn’t grab me, I love compelling great stories.”

The reality, Julius doesn’t have much to do with it. He wants to tell stories and likes to polish up reality a bit. His work often consists of manipulated situations: merged images, montages and films that can be seen on overwhelmingly large, meter-high and wide canvases or prints. “I tell little fairy tales with my work.” He likes big and impossible. No better motivation than someone who claims that something is not possible. There are no restrictions. Recurring elements in the work: masks, turns, reflections, contrasts: black-and-white, oldyoung, front becomes rear and bottom comes up. The classic frame is broken and enriched, by also showing the back of a photo, or photographing a production upside down. Reality is unmasked, or on the contrary gets a mask. The two-dimensionality is broken by playing with the question of what is shown outside the square frame. His work breaks the standard and dismantles the surface, tells about another world. Viewers are like a ballet dancer who has turned too many pirouettes: the image is discolored, perverted, appears to be incorrect, but at the same time looks fabulous. That is the essence of the work: wonder. The pleasure with which a story is told, playing impossibilities.

Julius Rooymans – The Shadow of the Master
10 March – 14 May 2022

Wanrooij Gallery in Amsterdam presents a solo exhibition of the Dutch photographer Julius Rooymans from 10 March until 14 May 2022. The gallery shows with The Shadow of the Master a new series of monumental artworks and portraits. Paintings of Rembrandt, Vermeer and Jan Steen come alive. The layered images, full of scenes and symbolism, reflect the Golden Age in an extra large format.

Artist Julius Rooymans is a passionate storyteller with a fascination for history and large projects. In 2019 he realized the project Nightwatch360 – The Other Side of Art, a photographic reconstruction with lookalikes and a fictitious backside of the iconic painting by Rembrandt, that is exhibited in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.

In the new art project The Shadow of the Master, the works of world-famous Dutch master painters come together and the dark sides of artistry are highlighted such as love, self-irony, poverty, sadness and misfortune. As with the Nightwatch360, 180 lookalikes were sought for this project who resemble their predecessors 350 years older.

Thanks to the cooperation of renowned institutions such as Allard Pierson, Museum Het Rembrandthuis, Museum Vrolik and well-known collectors and antique dealers, the photographic works show numerous original objects, crockery, weapons and sets. With the expertise and unbridled dedication of craftsmen such as make-up artist Arjen van der Grijn, costume designer Catherine Cuykens and art historian Marieke de Winkel, the costumes, jewelry and hairpieces are historically accurate down to the smallest detail.

Julius Rooymans grew up in an artist family and studied photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. He is a photographer for almost 25 years and made covers for Newsweek and The New York Times. The autonomous work of the visual artist has been presented at art fairs such as Art Miami and KunstRAI and is included in the collections of private collectors and companies. Rooymans lives and works in Amsterdam.

In addition to the exhibition at Wanrooij Gallery, The Shadow of the Master is on permanent display at the AFAS Theatre in Leusden. Five painters are central here: Rembrandt, Vermeer, Jan Steen, Vincent van Gogh and Piet Mondriaan. Eyecatcher is an Anatomical Theatre of 22 metres wide. There is also a making-of documentary about the art project and an audio tour with art-historical background information. The AFAS Theatre is organizing an event with the presentation of the photographic artworks on three dates: 26 March, 23 April and 21 May.

Pieter Ceizer

PIETER CEIZER

Pieter Ceizer is a Dutch typographical artist and designer living and working in Paris.

All Ceizer’s work is typographical or type based, his work mostly consists of clean retro-style script designs and hand lettering as well as colorful abstract compositions with type based shapes.

Ceizer’s choice of words, phrases and subject matter are empowering, humoristic and poetic. While studying the craft of typography, Ceizer started deconstructing letters to create colorful abstract compositions. His abstract work suggest a dream state of mind in which he blurs the line between words and figure, letters and abstract art. His paintings and wooden pieces balance color and shape, creating a playful and uplifting dynamic.

Ceizer believes in the power of written words. The written word is the best way to communicate and share thoughts or emotions. A written word on it’s own is an abstract idea, the meaning depends on the reader. Written words create an image of an idea in the mind of the reader, which can influence the readers thoughts. Written words can stimulate the brain and even change the way we act in life. The brain, Ceizer believes, does not make much of a distinction between reading about an experience and encountering it in real life; in each case, the same neurological regions are stimulated. If you change the words you read or say, you change the way you think and change your reality.

Tim de Vries

TIM DE VRIES

Tim de Vries, Wanrooij Gallery

Tim’s development as an artist started early with the collection of exclusive design objects. Gradually he moved towards making those objects himself, with epoxy resin as a favorite means of expression. Mastering the material, Tim skillfully combined it with the things he loves most. Like the time he made an art object out of his favorite sunglasses. It is exemplary for the type of artist that Tim is. He transforms consumer products into art objects. It is not surprising that he has been influenced by artists like Pop Art’s Andy Warhol, Roy Liechtenstein, Arman, and James Rosenquist.

American visual culture
Pop culture is one of the most significant sources of inspiration for the artist. Tim is a movie fanatic and an avid reader. He meticulously makes notes of his ideas, which are plenty and found all around the world. American visual culture especially has always appealed to him. As a young boy, Tim wanted to be Indiana Jones, hunting for treasures and exposing secrets. In many ways, these are elements he incorporates in his art today. Dividing his time between Amsterdam and Ibiza, Tim continuously looks for gems in the news, film, city life in the Dutch capital, and the laidback island-vibe of Ibiza, to capture them in his art.

Exposing secrets
Tim’s creative treasure hunting is illustrated by his artworks. Like his project Wasted Tables. They are made of steel frames with thick layers of epoxy resin as the table’s surface. Trapped inside the resin, objects are on display. A Wasted Table is like a still-life, but don’t expect flowers and food there. Tim’s artworks reveal what appears to be fragments from a hidden life, the kind that usually goes on behind closed doors. He exposes secrets with the transparent epoxy resin. By hiding the items in plain sight, the artist questions the secretiveness of it all. He objects to the unwritten rules of society. Tim argues that there is no shame in living your life the way you want to. Who is to say what has to be hidden, and what not?

The Case
Together with the creative guidance of Martijn Wanrooij, director of Wanrooij Gallery, the artist has raised his practice to a higher level. The spectacular result is their current project The Case, a perfect evolution for Tim as an artist.

The Case is a unique set of masterly crafted suitcases, with inside objects cast in epoxy resin. In his quest for The Case, Tim finds inspiration in different places, from movies from the eighties to the latest news. Think of a Jason Bourne-suitcase, a bribe-suitcase, or a hitman-suitcase.

The Case calls to mind feelings of exciting adventures, dark mystery, or hard action. The tension between the items inside The Case and the spectator that beholds them is always present. To the artist, looking at The Case is much more than just showcasing the contents of a suitcase. With his choice of objects, Tim integrates contemporary political and social issues with his art. What lies beneath the surface of The Case is a metaphor for what lies beneath the surface of society. The Case serves as a vehicle to expose how we judge the other, and ultimately ourselves.

FIDIA  FALASCHETTI  is an Italian artist, born in 1977 in Marche Italy

FIDIA’S  journey into art began in his early childhood , raised in a hugely  inspiring and creative family. At the age of 16, FIDIA was hired to produce wall paintings and illustrations for multiple stores and established companies. He grew up inspired by different subcultures, and then formed his creative skills from  street art and the hip hop world. He studied “Production Design” at the Academy of Fine Arts, between Macerata and Florence in Italy, where he graduated in 2002  having already  embarked on  his professional career as a  graphic designer, illustrator and photographer since 1995 he also collaborated with many international brands.

After a 2 month trip to The United States, in 2007 FIDIA decided to overturn his career, leaving the design industry and moving into Contemporary Art, which he found to be the ideal way to express and portray his feelings. The artist felt the need to start  talking  about the dark side of the world, trying to bring it to a more creative level. He realized that the best way to have a better world was to create positive art for the world which he  produces  through his illustrations and installations . In the same period, FIDIA  started his experience as an Art and Communications teacher which has been an amazing experience to gain knowledge about what the new generation needs.

LEON KEER

Leon Keer Wanrooij Gallery

Leon Keer is one of the world’s leading artists in anamorphic art. By playing with perspectives he creates incredible new worlds. The artist has executed numerous 3D murals and street paintings in Europe, the United States, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. In the Netherlands, he has cooperated with the Fries Museum, Museum Arnhem, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and Van Gogh Museum.

The artist is inspired by pop surrealism and new technology. With the use of Augmented Reality he is able to show an extra dimension in his art. A message seems to be present. Current issues are reviewed, such as environmental concerns, social inequality and the livability of this world. The artworks reflect a fascination for old materials and a timeless longing for unspoiled beauty.

Leon Keer lives and works in Utrecht and a visual artist since 1997. His autonomous work has been presented at international art fairs such as Art Miami, Moniker Art Fair London, SCOPE Basel and SCOPE New York. In 2018, he won the Street Art Awards Benelux for best artist. The extensive and iconic oeuvre of Leon Keer is captured in a first monograph, titled ‘In Case of lost Childhood’ and released in November 2020.

Leon Keer is a world leading artist in the anamorphic street art. He has executed commissions in Europe, The United States, Mexico, The United Arabic Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Russia, New Zealand, Australia and several Asian countries.
A message seems to be present in his work. Current issues are reviewed, such as environmental concerns and the livability of this world. Leon Keer is constantly aware of the playfulness and beauty versus the degradation around him, a contrast that he expresses and amplifies in his work and which he uses as a metaphor for live.

His paintings reflect his thoughts, confronting the viewer with the diseased spirit of our times, visible decay counter-pointing a timeless longing for unspoiled beauty.

During his career Leon Keer often presented his art by live-action-painting performances. His ability of performing as a street painter, lets him share the joy of painting with the public. The anamorphic paintings are temporary but the images are shared via social media all over the world. He says: ‘Every street art piece is unique and belongs to the street and its residents, the temporary fact about this artform strengthens its existence’.

Ego Leonard© by Leon Keer

Red trousers, blue shirt, always smiling, your best friend. On the beach in Brighton, children try to stand him up to see how big he really is, at Topanga Beach, he is happily presented as a new member of the local surf club, and at Siesta Key, after attracting a great deal of attention, he is charged with being an obstruction and taken into custody for 90 days.

Ego Leonard is an art project initiated by the Dutch artist Leon Keer. Since 2007, Ego has been putting in an appearance by washing up at various attractive locations all over the world. The eversmiling apparition evokes surprise and delight, but the unknown also makes people alert and uneasy. The familiarity of this figure, based on a wellknown toy, in any case makes many people curious. Bearing the text ‘No Real Than You Are’ on his shirt, he evokes a paradoxical feeling. The question is whether man’s presence in this world is any more real than that of Ego Leonard? In this world of discord and dissent, Ego Leonard turns up in all kinds of places. Whether your name is Gerard, Umdie or Mustafa, to Ego, everyone is equal. He feels at home anywhere and feels the same everywhere. People don’t all need to agree or have the same beliefs or standards. A sense of freedom in solidarity arises if you can suspend or even let go of your judgements about others. A better world can be crafted simply by allowing other people to be different. The paintings which are made in the name of Ego Leonard, in which he is always depicted with the same expression, therefore regularly focus on this connection. They deliberately make people aware of the beauty of their own environment and the fact that we can all feel like equals, anywhere in the world.

Fredrik Erichsen

FREDRIK ERICHSEN

Fredrik Erichsen

A normal German artist, born in 1980 in Bonn, grew up in Bornheim between the cities of Cologne and Bonn. With two craft apprenticeships (as a carpenter and painter) Erichsen began his professional life, but that always collided with his early passion for urban art. Initially with the graffiti, later with the street art.

In 2007, Erichsen got the opportunity to demonstrate his skills in the craft and his creativity at the Opera in Cologne as a stage painter, where he still works today. At the same time Freddy shifted his creative field of activity from the street to his studio.

His sensitive way of perceiving his surroundings and weaving this into his artistic work with, let him create the series of images “Concrete love”. This is a tribute to the beginnings of his artistic career, his idols at the time and the architectural style of exposed concrete. The images have the grace as if they were cut out of the metropolises of our world to preserve them for posterity. Similar to jars, pots and cave paintings in our museums from times gone by.

As the artist says about himself he is obsessed with creating beautiful surfaces and objects in which he can combine all his skills.

So in early 2019 Erichsen developed the “Concrete Smiley” a wall sculpture in different variations. Whether as a circular concrete smiley, Drip, The inner core or broken. The sculpture reminiscent of Emoji ‘s always make the viewer smile.

Since the end of 2008, a picture of the “Concete love series” hangs in the form of a collage in front of the parliamentary group meeting room of the party

“Bündnis 90/die Grünen” in the Reichstag building in Berlin.

NOART

A true Parisian, born here in 1965, Arnaud Lucet has let his imagination run wild through the streets and history of this city. His opus, called No Art, is a nostalgic reve- rence to Parisian culture and French innovation with a conscienceness for the environment, and a touch of humor.
His art, based on reccuperation of industrial parts and objects that would otherwise end up in the refuse heap, takes it’s original inspiration from Jules Vernes’ novel, “20000 leagues under the sea”, and its humor from a Warner Brothers cartoon (Wyle Coyote and the Road Runner), to create on-of-a-kind pieces that have style and story. Décorum, lamps, or furniture pieces… this is not your typical design. It’s futuristic, nostalgic and “tongue-in-cheek” all at the same time, and you’ve never seen anything like it!

At age 20 he received his diploma from the Ecole d’Art de la Rue Madame, and less than ten years later he had his first exposition at the Galerie de Nesle in Paris, titled “C’est toujours comme-ça…” Since then he hasn’t cea- sed to reveale his works all over the Parisian landscape, scattered across France and in several places throu- ghout Europe. He has even sojourned in India at an ar- tists’ residence at Tamil Nadu where he worked on “The Dune”. So one could say he’s “going places” but home is definately where his heart is. Notice on his new poster for the current No Art exposi- tion “L’Explosition”, the font of the title is the same old font of the RATP, the company that exploits the Parisian underground transport system. If you look closely at some of his pieces, you’ll see things that come directly from the walls of Parisian buildings, etc… His work is full of these “clin d’oeil” towards Paris and it’s innerworkings.
From the local water company (which we find reccurent in many of his pieces) to the aluminum piping, to the nuts and bolts that hold the city together, his art is a deep hommage to his hometown.

In addition to designing the office of the mayor of the 4th district of Paris, he has also designed several other inte- resting places.

For art collectors, these are items to snag NOW, be- cause they go very fast. But The artist does create cus- tom pieces and comissioned works. For rennovators, he also could very happy to take old industrial style “junk” off your hands. Or you can have him create a work of art from the ancient sink piping that you just had replaced in your Parisian pied-à-terre apartment, or for Thing-fin-ders, items that you found on the sidewalk next to the trash can could become the next No Art chef d’oeuvre!

KOH SANG WOO

ecognizable by the blue tone photograph that captures his subject using negative film, Koh Sang Woo is a visual artist who consolidates photography, performance, and painting. His work is a result of dialogue with the model. The Decoration of their bodies and hear with flowers and butterflies and painting them with brush strokes is a part of performance and preparation for photographing. His subjects are completely revealed, represented in their essential purity. Change of the color and the light in exposure gives them intense visual and emotional charge. Woo gives us the opportunity to see the world in reverse, to reconsider the way in which we look at others and understand ourselves.

Koh Sang Woo graduated with School of Art Institute of Chicago in 2001, he double-majored in Photography and Performance Art. Working in both mediums at the same time allowed him to explore the relation between captured moment and movement. He thinks that photography is lacked by emotion and that its combination with performance is the only way that right message gets to the audience. Koh Sang Woo has exhibited widely worldwide and was listed in 2013 as one the 100 most important Korean contemporary artists. He has participated in various international fairs such as Armory Show, Armory Photography, Art Basel HongKong and Art Miami and works are held in various international collections including National Museum of Contemporary Art and Savina Museum in Korea.
